It’s not good to be a bitter person. Unfortunately, I am sometimes.
I attend a church on Sunday mornings that used to sponsor our ministry efforts with Zach’s House. Before they ended their sponsorship, I was told by one elder that our efforts to feed the homeless were nothing worth writing home about. He said, “That’s old stuff. We’ve done that and no one really cares about doing that any longer.”
I had mentioned that good work and how we wanted to get the youth group of the church to help us because it was something good to do for others. That’s when the elder made the remark.
Okay, I got over that. I was no longer bitter about the church not sponsoring our work. No longer bitter about the elder. Fast forward to today. The youth minister of this church talked about a short term missions trip the youth were taking. He spoke glowlingly about their itenerary. Then he almost exploded with glee when he announced the grand finale of their trip. They were going to go to a soup kitchen and feed 200-250 homeless people.
I shook my head in disbelief. If that good work is so amazing, why wait to drive 1000 miles away to do it? Why could this church not do this good work right here in our town? Every Thursday night there’s a group of 200 homeless and poor who are in need of food and are provided the food in an awesome sit down environment, on china, served by volunteer waiters and waitresses and it’s done only 15 miles from the church building. A church in downtown provides the space and the food. Praise God for their efforts.
These homeless and poor we help feed are treated with a lot of respect. They are engaged, conversed with, served. They are not just slopped out a plate full of food and allowed to go sit by themselves at a long table.
I love that God has allowed my family and our ministry to do good for others, not too terribly far away from our own front door.
One lesson to churches would be this: Find good you can do in your community. Don’t wait to travel in the summer five states away to do the good that needs to be done at home.
