April Fools (a test from God?)

Yesterday was a test. It may have even been a test from God. As is typical, our reactions say so much more about us than our actions do. How did you react to the April Fools pranks that were pulled on you? Did you have one big test or are you surrounded by people that keep the pop quizzes coming?

@lindawoods on Twitter spoke about how in the “olden days,”  most April Fools jokes had to do with somone being pregnant. In a follow up tweet, she admitted that the “olden days” were the 70s and 80s. But April Fools has changed in some ways. Linda said most of the jokes/pranks now have something to do with death. I would add “deportation” to the strange prank idea list.

One of our friends from Zach’s House, our church of small groups, told me yesterday a la migra story. For those uninitated in Spanish, la migra means immigration. Wednesday morning, he and his ex-wife sent off their son to spend time with family in south Texas. Their son had no i.d. after losing his wallet the previous week. About 7am, my friend’s other son called him. He was worried about his brother. “He’s been picked up by immigration,” he said. “He’s been taken to Mexico.” My friend then assured his oldest son that his brother was okay and told him how Immigration worked, telling him they’ll detain him for a few days first. That’s when my friend went into action, calling friends, relatives and former in-laws. He was frantic.

After a call to his former sister-in-law, her response made this mess perfectly clear.  “You know Paula. You know how she is. It’s just a stupid April Fools joke.” Wow!!! I would have reacted badly. I would have reacted in a most unchristian way, or so I think. I probably would have been more upset than relieved. How would you have reacted?

My friend didn’t go ballistic. He did consider the source. If this was a test from God, he passed. I’d appreciate hearing about any April Fool’s tests you may have passed (or failed). Leave a comment below and tell me about your foolish Wednesday.
